Winter is the easiest time of year to see Luray Caverns. The underground part doesn't change with the seasons, the queues in summer and October don't happen, and when you come back up there's a hot tub ten minutes away. Here's how we'd plan a weekend around it between January and March.
Why winter works for the caverns
Luray Caverns is open every day of the year. Underground it stays at about 54°F whatever the weather is doing outside, so a cold or wet day doesn't spoil the visit. The paved path runs about a mile and takes an hour or so if you stop to look. Bring a layer anyway. Coming in from 25°F, 54°F feels warm, but you'll be standing still a fair amount.
The other reason is the calendar. Luray is at its busiest in summer and in October, when the leaves turn. A winter weekday, early in the morning, is a quieter time to stand under the formations and hear the Great Stalacpipe Organ.
What one ticket covers
When we checked luraycaverns.com on the day we posted this, admission was $36 for adults, $34 for seniors, $18 for children 6 to 12, and free under 6. Prices change, so check before you go, and buy from the caverns directly. We have no arrangement with them.
That one ticket also gets you into the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village and Toy Town Junction, all on the same site. The museum is warm and indoors, which makes it a good second stop in January. The Heritage Village is mostly outdoors, so leave it for a dry afternoon. The Garden Maze and the Rope Adventure Park beside the caverns are ticketed separately and depend on the season and the weather, so confirm they're running before you plan around them.

A weekend, roughly
Friday. Leave DC after the worst of the traffic if you can. On clear roads it's about two hours to the cabins. Check-in is from 3 PM. Get the hot tub on and save the plans for tomorrow.
Saturday morning. The caverns, early. From the cabins it's a ten-minute drive, not a day trip, so there's no need to plan a whole day around it. Do the museum while you're there.
Saturday afternoon. Downtown Luray is also about ten minutes away, with lunch and a walk on the Hawksbill Greenway along the creek. If the weather is good, Shenandoah National Park's Thornton Gap entrance is fifteen minutes from the cabins. The park entrance is $30 per vehicle and valid for seven days, card only. In winter, sections of Skyline Drive close in ice and snow, sometimes at short notice, so check the park's alerts before you drive up.
Saturday evening. Back to the cabin. A fire, the hot tub, and a sky that gets properly dark early in January.
Sunday. Check-out is at 10 AM. If you didn't get to the Heritage Village on Saturday, it's on the way out.

Which cabin
All three cabins sit on the same hillside, the same ten minutes from the caverns, and each has its own private hot tub.
The Turtle is for two: a king bed facing a forest window, a fire table on the deck and an observation deck at the top of the hill for the stars.
The Sparrow is a 1,000 sq ft A-frame for up to four, with a wood stove in the living room and a stone wood-burning fire pit out front. Bring your own firewood; the Walmart in Luray and the gas stations nearby sell it.
The Stag sleeps six in two bedrooms with two bathrooms. Its hot tub is on a covered deck, so a wet evening doesn't cancel it, and the game loft upstairs is there for when nobody wants to go out again.
Getting up the hill
All three cabins share a gravel mountain road. We strongly recommend four-wheel or all-wheel drive, especially in winter, and we clear the road after it snows.
Open weekends, January to March
On the day we posted this (26 October), these Friday-and-Saturday weekends were open:
- The Turtle: 12–14 and 19–21 March
- The Sparrow: 15–17 and 22–24 January; 5–7, 19–21 and 26–28 February; 5–7 March
- The Stag: 8–10, 15–17, 22–24 and 29–31 January; 5–7 and 26–28 February
There are many more open weeknights in those months. Friday and Saturday arrivals need two nights; any other night can be booked on its own. If your check-in is three months or more away, the site takes 10% off the nightly rate automatically. The booking page shows what's open right now and the full price for your dates, taxes and cleaning included, before you pay.
