Kamara Cabins
Luray Caverns stalactites reflected in still water

Luray, Virginia

Cabins near Luray Caverns.

Ten minutes from the caverns, ten from downtown Luray, fifteen from the national park. Three cabins with private hot tubs on one wooded hillside.

The short version

Close enough to go twice.

Luray Caverns is the reason most people first drive to Luray, and it is the one plan that works in any weather. From the cabins it is a ten-minute drive, not a day trip.

Luray Caverns — 10 min

The largest caverns in the eastern United States: cathedral-sized rooms, a lake that mirrors the ceiling, and the Great Stalacpipe Organ, which plays the formations themselves.

Downtown Luray — 10 min

A real Main Street: restaurants, galleries and the Hawksbill Greenway along the creek behind it.

Shenandoah National Park — 15 min

The Thornton Gap entrance puts you straight onto Skyline Drive, at the middle of the park.

The ticket

What one ticket gets you

The largest caverns in the eastern United States, and a genuinely strange place: cathedral-sized rooms, a lake that reflects the ceiling so cleanly it reads as a drop, and the Great Stalacpipe Organ, which plays the formations themselves. The paved path runs about a mile and takes an hour or so at a wandering pace.

One ticket also covers the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village and Toy Town Junction, so the ticket is worth more than the caverns alone. The Car & Carriage Caravan Museum takes twenty minutes if you are passing through and an hour if anyone in the car likes cars.

A hedge maze of eight-foot ornamental bushes, and a multi-level ropes course with bridges and obstacles. Both sit beside the caverns and both are the part children remember. Ticketed separately from caverns admission, and weather-dependent and seasonal — confirm they are running before you build a day around them.

Prices, at our last check (September 2026): Adults $36, seniors $34, children 6–12 $18, under 6 free — check before you go, prices move. Buy from the caverns directly. We have no arrangement with them and earn nothing from sending you.

Make a day of it

The rest of Luray

A real Main Street rather than a preserved one: restaurants, galleries, antiques, and the Hawksbill Greenway running behind it along the creek. Most of an afternoon if you let it be.

Triple Crown BBQ for smoked meat and a lunchtime queue that is worth it. Rancho Viejo for generous Mexican. Circa '31 at the Mimslyn Inn for the dressed-up evening, with the Speakeasy bar next door for a quieter drink. Main Street Flavors for ice cream on the way home.

Worth knowing: about 54°F underground whatever the season: bring a layer. And many kitchens close earlier than you expect midweek — worth a call ahead.

For the park, the river and the rest of the valley, the Explore guide has drive times, fees and what closes when, and the Shenandoah National Park guide covers entrances and seasons.

After the caverns

Back to a hot tub, not a hotel corridor.

Every cabin has its own private hot tub. The Turtle is built for two, with a king bed facing a forest window and a stargazing deck. The Sparrow is a 1,000 sq ft A-frame with a wood stove, sleeping four. The Stag sleeps six, with a game loft for the evening.

Where to stay

Three cabins, the same ten minutes

All three are on the same hillside, the same distance from the caverns. The difference is size.

Questions

Before you book

How far are the cabins from Luray Caverns?

About 10 minutes by car. Downtown Luray is about 10 minutes too, and the Thornton Gap entrance to Shenandoah National Park about 15.

What does a caverns ticket include?

One ticket also covers the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village and Toy Town Junction. The Garden Maze and the Rope Adventure Park beside them are ticketed separately.

How much are tickets?

At our last check (September 2026): adults $36, seniors $34, children 6–12 $18, under 6 free — check before you go, prices move. Buy from the caverns directly.

What should we wear?

About 54°F underground whatever the season: bring a layer. The paved path runs about a mile and takes an hour or so at a wandering pace, so comfortable shoes matter more than anything else.

Are the caverns open in winter?

Yes, every day of the year. Underground the weather never changes, which is why the caverns are the standard plan for a rainy or icy day.
