Kamara Cabins
Shenandoah National Park ridgeline at golden hour

Luray, Virginia

Cabins near Shenandoah National Park.

Fifteen minutes from the Thornton Gap entrance. Three cabins, three hot tubs, one hillside.

The short version

Close enough to be on Skyline Drive before the overlooks fill up.

The park has three entrances along its 105-mile length, and which one you use changes the day more than most people expect. Thornton Gap is ours, and it is the middle one.

Thornton Gap — 15 min

Straight onto Skyline Drive, roughly at the park's midpoint. You can turn north or south and reach most of the park's best-known overlooks inside an hour.

Old Rag trailhead — about an hour

Virginia's most famous hike, and the one worth building a day around. Day-use tickets are required in season and they sell out.

Hawksbill Summit — about 40 min

The highest point in the park at 4,051 ft, and a short, steep walk from the Drive rather than a full day out.

Seasons

When to come, honestly

October is the reason people think of Shenandoah, and it earns it. It is also the hardest weekend to get, here and everywhere else in the valley — if you want foliage, book months ahead rather than weeks.

May and June are the quiet secret: everything is green, the waterfalls are actually running, and you can still get a Saturday at a month’s notice.

Winter is the quietest season here, and the trade is real — Skyline Drive closes when it ices, and it can close at short notice. Check the park’s road status before you set off. The hot tub is considerably better in February than in August.

Beyond the park

The days it rains

Luray Caverns is 10 minutes away, stays at 54°F year-round, and does not care what the weather is doing. It is the standard save for a washed-out afternoon.

Downtown Luray is also 10 minutes: a walkable Main Street with restaurants and the Hawksbill Greenway. The Shenandoah River is closer still, and the outfitters in town run shuttles for kayaks, canoes and tubes.

Questions

Before you book

How far are the cabins from Shenandoah National Park?

About 15 minutes to the Thornton Gap entrance, which is the middle of the park's three entrances and the one that puts you straight onto Skyline Drive. Luray Caverns and downtown Luray are both about 10 minutes the other way.

Which park entrance should I use?

Thornton Gap, on US-211, is the closest and the easiest. Front Royal is about 45 minutes north and Swift Run Gap about 40 minutes south, so you would only use those to start a specific hike at that end of the park.

Do I need a permit or a pass?

You need a park entrance pass, bought at the gate or in advance from the National Park Service. Old Rag additionally requires a day-use ticket in season, and those sell out — book that before you book anything else, because it is the only part of the trip that can be full.

When is the best time to visit?

October is the busiest and the most spectacular, and it books furthest ahead. May and June are green, quiet and much easier to get a weekend in. Winter is the quietest season, but Skyline Drive closes in ice, so check the road status before a winter trip.

Can we hike Old Rag from the cabins?

Yes, though it is a drive: about an hour to the trailhead, over Thornton Gap and through Sperryville. It is a 9.4-mile circuit with a genuine rock scramble and takes most people the better part of a day, so plan on an early start and a hot tub afterwards.

Is there anything to do if the weather turns?

Luray Caverns stays 54°F and dry whatever the sky is doing, and it is 10 minutes away. Downtown Luray has restaurants and galleries within a short walk of each other.
