The experience

Cabins that are the destination.

Owner-built, design-led and ten minutes from Shenandoah National Park.

The Sparrow living room under the cathedral ceiling

Designed, not decorated

Clean Scandinavian lines meet the warmth of West and North African textiles and pattern. It's the owner's heritage, built into a Moroccan-inspired bedroom, floor-pillow lounges and forest-facing glass.

The Turtle's private hot tub and fire table on the deck

Your own hot tub, your own sky

Each cabin has a private hot tub on its own deck, a fire feature for cold nights, and nothing overlooking you but trees. The Turtle adds an elevated stargazing platform at the top of the hill.

Fire and string lights on The Sparrow's deck at night

Slow mornings, big days

Coffee on the deck, then Skyline Drive, the caverns or the river, all within fifteen minutes, or Old Rag an hour away. Back by dusk for the fire pit, the pizza oven and the hot tub.

The Sparrow kitchen and dining area

Work from the woods

Starlink internet averaging around 180 Mbps in every cabin, and a loft workspace with a computer and printer at The Sparrow. Video calls with a mountain behind you.

Two nights, planned

What a weekend here actually looks like.

Four versions, depending on who is in the car. Everything named is real and nearby; nothing needs booking that we have not flagged.

A weekend with nothing in it but each other

Two nights, just the two of you

At The Turtle

  1. Friday evening

Arrive, put the pizza oven on rather than driving back into town, and take the first glass up to the observation deck once it is properly dark.

  2. Saturday morning

Coffee behind the picture window, then Stony Man — 1.6 miles, an hour, and the best view in the park for the least effort.

  3. Saturday afternoon

Downtown Luray for lunch, the caverns if the weather turns, and back before the light goes.

  4. Saturday night

Hot tub, fire table, and the swing bench under the darkest sky on the hill.

  5. Sunday

A slow one. Check-out is 10:00 AM and the drive back down is prettier than the drive up.

Something for everyone, including the eight-year-old

Two nights with the children

At The Stag

  1. Friday evening

Unpack, then let the loft do the work — arcade, air hockey and the Board console while dinner happens downstairs.

  2. Saturday morning

Luray Caverns, which is indoors, a mile of easy path, and strange enough to hold anyone's attention. One ticket also covers the Car & Carriage Museum and the Heritage Village.

  3. Saturday afternoon

The Garden Maze and the ropes course next door if the weather holds — both ticketed separately, so check they are running.

  4. Saturday night

Fire pit out front, six chairs, and karaoke indoors for whoever is still going.

  5. Sunday

A short walk on the property, then home.

Six of you, one kitchen island, no schedule

Two nights with friends

At The Stag

  1. Friday evening

Everyone arrives at a different time. The covered deck, the six-person hot tub and the fire table cover all of them.

  2. Saturday morning

A late breakfast round the island, then the river — tubing or kayaking on the South Fork, ten minutes down the hill, shuttle included.

  3. Saturday afternoon

Back for the hot tub, or into Luray for Triple Crown BBQ.

  4. Saturday night

Karaoke, the record player, and the loft for whoever wants a tournament.

  5. Sunday

Coffee on the deck and a slow departure.

Here for the trails, not the hot tub — though the hot tub helps

Two nights of actual hiking

At The Sparrow

  1. Friday evening

Arrive, light the wood stove, and get the boots by the door. Sort the Old Rag ticket now if you have not — it is required 1 March to 30 November.

  2. Saturday, early

Old Rag. Nine and a half miles, a real scramble, and a full day — start at first light for the car park and the summit both.

  3. Saturday night

The hot tub, the fire pit, and an early one.

  4. Sunday morning

Something kind to the legs: Dark Hollow Falls is 1.4 miles, or Hawksbill is 1.7 to the highest point in the park. Neither takes the morning.

Distances, fees and permits for everything above are on the Explore Shenandoah guide.

When it rains

It will rain at some point. That is fine.

Everything here is either inside a cabin or inside a building ten minutes away.

  • The game loft at The Stag

Arcade cabinet, air hockey and the Board console, with a window full of wet trees to watch it from. This is the one that turns a washed-out afternoon into the part everyone remembers.

  • A film and the fire

Streaming on the big screen in every cabin, an electric fireplace at The Turtle and The Stag, and a wood stove at The Sparrow for the proper version.

  • Karaoke and records

The karaoke machine and the record player at The Stag, and a record player at The Turtle. Rain is the correct weather for both.

  • Luray Caverns

Fifty-four degrees and entirely indoors whatever the sky is doing, ten minutes away, with the Car & Carriage Museum on the same ticket. The obvious answer, and it is obvious because it works.

  • The hot tub, obviously

Warm water and cold rain is better than warm water and sunshine, and every cabin has its own.

  • Town, slowly

Downtown Luray is ten minutes off: lunch, galleries and antiques, none of which mind the weather.

Whole-property stays

Book the whole hillside.

The cabins sit on adjacent lots: together they sleep up to 12 guests across 3 cabins and 3 private hot tubs. Family reunions, two-couple weekends, small retreats and celebrations get separate space and one shared fire.

  • The Turtle

    Sleeps 2

  • The Sparrow

    Sleeps 4

  • The Stag

    Sleeps 6
