Romantic Cabins in Luray, VA: Which of Our Three Is Right for Two

By · · 6 min read · trip planning

The Turtle's king bed against the orange accent wall, with windows to the trees

When I built The Turtle, I built it for couples. It has one bedroom and one king bed, and everything else in it was planned around two people. What I didn't plan for was how many couples would book the other two cabins as well. Most of the guests who stay at The Sparrow come as a couple, and The Stag, which I built with families and groups in mind, has turned out to work for two as well.

A lot of those trips are for an occasion. People come to The Sparrow and The Turtle for anniversaries and birthdays, and straight after their weddings. In the last year and a half, guests have written to us about a first anniversary and a 20th at The Turtle, another 20th at The Sparrow, honeymoons at both, a 38th birthday and an engagement.

So if you're looking for a romantic cabin in Luray, the honest answer is that all three of ours will do it. They just do it differently. Each one has its own private hot tub on its own deck, and each sits on its own lot on the same wooded hillside, ten minutes from downtown Luray and fifteen from the Thornton Gap entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Here's how to choose.

The Turtle: built for two and nothing else

The Turtle is the one to pick if you want the whole place to be about the two of you. It sleeps two, and only two. The king bed faces a 7 × 6 ft picture window, so you wake up looking into the trees. The walk-in shower has a 7-foot glass wall onto the woods, and there are robes on the hooks.

Evenings move outside. The hot tub and a propane fire table are on the main deck. At the top of the lot there's an observation deck with a swinging bench and a fire bowl, and it's the darkest sky on the hill. There's a Ninja wood-fired pizza oven if you'd rather cook than drive into town. Inside, a record player sits beside the sofa and there's an electric fireplace.

It's also the most private of the three lots, with forest on every side.

"My partner and I spent three nights at the Turtle for our one-year anniversary, and we had a wonderful time!" (Faith, March 2026)

"Our mornings by the fire on the observation swing were a highlight, and our evenings were spent making pizza with the wood-fired oven and soaking in the hot tub under the stars." (Logan, January 2026)

One thing to know before you book: The Turtle's kitchen has a cooktop but no oven. If a home-cooked anniversary dinner is part of the plan, The Sparrow or The Stag will suit you better.

The Sparrow: the A-frame most couples choose

The Sparrow sleeps four, but most of the time it's two people under that A-frame roof. It's 1,000 square feet, with a cathedral ceiling, floor-to-ceiling glass and a wood-burning stove in the middle of the room. The queen bed is up in the loft, open to the living room below, so you go to sleep under the peak of the roof.

The wood stove is the heart of The Sparrow in the colder months.

The Sparrow has more ways to sit by a fire than any of our cabins: the wood stove inside, a gas fire-pit table on the deck next to the five-person hot tub, and a stone, wood-burning fire pit out front with a hanging swing and a view across the valley. There's also a two-person hammock in the trees. The kitchen is fully equipped, so cooking dinner together is easy.

People ask me whether The Sparrow is too big for two. The guests answer that better than I can:

"We went for our 20th anniversary and enjoyed a restful four days." (Rachel, May 2026)

"We stayed almost a week for our honeymoon and it was absolutely beautiful! So peaceful and relaxing just what we needed after the wedding!" (Sarah, October 2025)

"excellent place to get engaged. we're looking forward to return next year" (Edward, January 2026)

The Stag: when you want room to spread out

The Stag is our newest cabin and our biggest. It sleeps six, so a couple has a lot of house to themselves. That's the appeal. The main-level suite has a king bed and its own 55-inch TV, so you never need to go upstairs at all if you don't want to.

The six-person hot tub is on a 25 by 10 ft deck that's fully covered, so a rainy night still ends in the tub. A propane fire table sits on the same deck, and out front the fire pit is ringed by Adirondack chairs under string lights. Inside there's an electric fireplace, a record player and a karaoke machine. The full kitchen has an oven and a big island, which makes it the best of our three for cooking a proper meal together. And if you're the kind of couple who likes a little competition, the game loft upstairs has an air hockey table.

Pick The Stag for a long weekend when you want space, a real kitchen and a hot tub that works in any weather.

Which one should you book?

  • An anniversary or a first trip away together: The Turtle, the cabin built only for two, or The Sparrow, where a lot of our anniversary guests stay.
  • A honeymoon: either. Honeymoon couples have stayed at both, and at The Sparrow they've often stayed close to a week.
  • A birthday: any of the three. If you're bringing a few friends to celebrate, The Sparrow sleeps four and The Stag six.
  • A cozy winter weekend: The Sparrow, for the wood stove and the A-frame.
  • Cooking together, or a longer stay: The Stag or The Sparrow, which both have full kitchens.
  • Bringing your dog: all three allow up to two pets. The fee is $25 per stay at The Turtle and $50 at The Sparrow and The Stag.

Planning the weekend

For the days themselves, downtown Luray, Luray Caverns and the Shenandoah River are all ten minutes away. Skyline Drive starts fifteen minutes up the road at Thornton Gap, and Stony Man is the easy walk with the best view for the effort. Our Explore page lists where we send people for dinner, and our guide to cabins near Shenandoah National Park covers the park. Coming from the city? Our romantic weekend plan from DC has the timings.

A few practical things:

  • The road: the last stretch is a gravel mountain road. We strongly recommend four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and we clear it when it snows.
  • Firewood: bring your own for the wood stove and the fire pits. The Walmart in Luray and the gas stations near the cabins sell it.
  • Stays: check-in is at 3:00 PM and check-out at 10:00 AM. Stays that start on a Friday or Saturday are two nights.
  • Price: each cabin's booking page shows the nightly rate, the cleaning fee and tax for your dates before you pay.

Whichever you choose, the hot tub is yours alone, and the evening ends by the fire.
